Quarry Integrated Communications

Quarry is a modern marketing agency and a highly talented team. It’s rare that you find a place where teammates are so passionate about their craft, about exceeding customer and user expectations, and about working together to imagine something better.

I joined Quarry in 2012 and worked and learned and grew together with them for 6 years while designing and coding a range of products for a variety of clients. I worked on the Experience Design team with a focus on digital. I started as a hybrid front-end developer and digital designer. Over the course of six years I transitioned from 80% code to 100% design.

Outcomes

Lots of great things happened in the online world during those six years, I worked with a team to pioneer responsive web design and coding in the agency, had my attention to detail levelled up by some talented designers and CDs, learned the strength of a team, and got a thorough immersion in marketing strategy. It’s amazing to think how fast things change in a few short years. My last year at Quarry was spent focused on UX design for Windstream and their Wincare software. This is where I grew in my love for UX and software UI design.

Windstream Wincare

Nobody likes calling their ISP. Long waits, cheesy music, opening up tickets.

Wincare is Windstream’s in-house tool for managing their cable and internet subscribers, and diagnosing and tracking connection issues. Quarry was given the opportunity to do a full field study on the call centre operations across multiple sites in the US. We learned a ton about the call centre crews and their daily working environments. Most memorable to me is the kind of person who works in a call centre is someone who genuinely loves helping people. Imagine your job being held up by the main piece of technology you’re required to use. Wait, maybe it’s not too hard to imagine. Turns out empathy flowed freely to all parties involved in this challenge.

Roll: UX Designer, User testing, co-ran customer workshops.

Our research team identified a series of ways to improve life in the call centres, one of which was Wincare. This is where I stepped into the project. We went through an extensive process to review, diagnose and improve the Wincare UI experience.

  • Journey mapping customer workshops
  • UX heuristic review of existing interface
  • UX recommendations
  • Multiple UX sprints to tackle the workflows and recommendations
  • Remote user testing all along the way
  • UX sprints for desktop and mobile

NexGen Storage

NexGen needed a strong new brand identity with supporting collateral to help distinguish them from the market.

They had just learned that their product line was being spun out from SanDisk. They needed a new brand identity with supporting collateral to help distinguish their offer in the market. In a very short time we worked through the design phases from sketch to design to implementation and came out with a pile of first class marketing pieces:

  • Logo and brand identity design
  • Website design
  • Mobile application design
  • Booths and other marketing collateral
  • Bezel design

Roll: Graphic design, logo design, visual identity design, website design, mobile app design, web and mobile UX, bezel design.

In agency life, it’s almost inevitable that your own website is left at the bottom of the pile.

We decided to take a purposeful look at ours and see if we could design something new, flexible, and long-lasting. We went through an in-depth process of identifying personas and design edicts and then whiteboarding and wireframing and reviewing with internal stakeholders before finally landing at the end result. I worked on a team of designers to help this project come to life.

Roll: Graphic design, UX design.

Each one was a challenge in its own right, and each one another opportunity to see the positive outcomes of an intentional user-centered design process.
